Hope Through Hounds

Training dogs. Connecting people.

Hope Through Hounds is rooted in connection, compassion, and community. We support humans and dogs as two distinct species learning to communicate, build trust, and navigate the world together.

From puppy socialization, to manners, to fear and anxiety, we use a nuanced, trauma-informed lens that honors both ends of the leash. We strive to foster connection, curiosity, and community while ensuring an inclusive, compassionate training experience for both humans and dogs.

Meet Vanessa

Hi, I’m Vanessa Hajek, the owner of Hope Through Hounds.

Some of you may recognize me from the 12 years I have been professionally training dogs first with Hands Full Dog Training, and then with Blue Skies Pet Care. If you do, hello! I’m so happy you are here. If you don’t know me yet, welcome.

My Unique Trauma-Informed Approach

For a long time, I thought dogs were my puropse. Over the past few years, my perspective has evolved. Through my own ongoing recovery journey from Complex Trauma and C-PTSD, I deeply understand that true learning cannot happen without safety for either humans or dogs.

I see this truth play out daily: in my own life, in a fearful dog taking its first tentative bite of food, and in clients who blossom when they are truly seen and supported.

My Credentials & Commitment to Learning

  • Master’s Degree in Psychology from Emporia State University

  • Accredited Professional Dog Trainer via the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC-ADT)

  • Graduate of the Academy for Dog Trainers

  • Certified Training Partner with the Karen Pryor Academy (KPA-CTP)

  • Separation Anxiety Professional Behavior Consultant

Beyond these credentials, I have completed Dr. Susan Friedman’s Living and Learning with Animals course, attended national conferences, and completed a not insignificant amount of online dog classes and workshops.

How I Can Help You

Whether you are navigating mental health challenges while trying to manage a dog, dealing with a dog experiencing fear, reactivity, or other big emotions, or simply wanting to invite guests over without feeling shame about your dog's behavior, I am here to help.

I am not a mental health professional and as such I do not treat mental health, however, I will meet both you and your dog exactly where you are, using a trauma-informed lens and some strategically timed string cheese.

“Vanessa is not only a highly skilled dog trainer, she is kind, empathetic, and considerate of the humans involved. No matter how difficult your situation, she can help you and your dog, using her special combination of patience, humor, and sensitivity. I would recommend her to anyone in need of support with their dog’s behavior.”
